PALLET SHUTTLE WAREHOUSE - PALLET SHUTTLE SYSTEM - RADIO PALLET SHUTTLE SYSTEM

In this context, more focus needs to be placed on designing and implementing flexible and versatile warehouses that can meet the three most critical market demands today: high storage density, low storage costs, and fast throughput. Attuned to business market shifts, Intech has chosen to develop high-density systems to help companies meet these needs agilely. Among them, the Automated Pallet Shuttle System is a highly cost-effective warehouse automation solution that delivers high efficiency. It is particularly beneficial in compact warehouses for consumer products, cold storage environments, and facilities with a large number of pallets per SKU.

I. OVERVIEW OF PALLET SHUTTLE - A MODERN WAREHOUSING SYSTEM

To help customers understand the outstanding features of high-density semi-automated storage systems, Intech Robotics presents the most prominent information about the Automated Pallet Shuttle system below.

1. What is Pallet Shuttle?

Intech Pallet Shuttle is a modern system researched, developed, and launched by us in 2022. The Robot Shuttle is a material handling device within the racking system and a key component of the Pallet Shuttle warehouse, facilitating optimal goods transport within the racks. This is a rail-running robot that operates in storage lanes to load and unload pallets, functioning through a coordinated forklift-robot system that is scientifically programmed and controlled.

2. What is a Pallet Shuttle Warehouse?

A Pallet Shuttle warehouse is a semi-automated storage solution or High-Density Automated Storage System that utilizes a Shuttle car running along rails within the racking to store and retrieve pallets. This increases the number of stored pallets and improves cycle times. Logistics has become a vital factor in business management as it allows for the creation of real competitive advantages.

II. PALLET SHUTTLE WAREHOUSE OPERATING PROCESS

In a Radio Pallet Shuttle semi-automated system, a forklift places pallets onto the rails at the entrance of each lane. The shuttle then lifts and moves the pallets to the nearest empty position in the lane, maximizing storage space. The movement of the Shuttle cars inside the racks is automated and executed based on operator commands via a remote control.

  • FIFO (First-In, First-Out): The first pallet stored in each lane will be the first one unloaded from that lane. Forklifts operate on two sides of the warehouse: one for loading and one for unloading. This is ideal when the warehouse serves as a buffer zone between two areas.

  • LIFO (Last-In, First-Out): The last pallet stored in each lane is the first one unloaded. Loading and unloading are performed from the same side of the rack. This is the most common method used in Radio Shuttle warehouses.

PALLET SHUTTLE OPERATION - STEP 1 PALLET SHUTTLE OPERATION - STEP 2
Step 1: The forklift places the shuttle car onto the rack lane where pallets need to be stored or retrieved. Step 2: Next, the forklift places a pallet at the lane entrance. The forklift never enters the racking system.
PALLET SHUTTLE OPERATION - STEP 3 PALLET SHUTTLE OPERATION - STEP 4
Step 3: The operator uses the remote to send commands to the Shuttle. Once the pallet position is identified, the shuttle lifts the pallet and moves deep into the lane to the nearest available spot before lowering it. Step 4: The shuttle returns to the lane entrance to store the next pallet (if needed) until the lane is full. To retrieve pallets, the operator performs a similar operation.

Functions of the Radio Shuttle Warehouse System:

Standard Advanced
Storage: Loads individual pallets into the rack. Pallet Compaction (Inbound): Automatically groups pallets to clear space (FIFO function - inventory consolidation).
Retrieval: Brings individual pallets to the rack face. Pallet Compaction (Outbound): Automatically groups pallets toward the exit (FIFO function - shipping consolidation).
Continuous Unloading: Brings pallets to the rack face; while waiting for the forklift, it retrieves the next pallet. Unloading Queue: Brings the 1st pallet to the exit, then returns for the 2nd. If the 1st is still there, it waits to place the 2nd immediately after.
Set pallet spacing from 20-150mm. Anti-collision between multiple shuttles in the same lane.
Remote can control 4 devices simultaneously. Inventory pallet counting.

1. Racking Framework

Pallet racking is used to lift, support, and store goods. The framework includes various types to meet load capacity, style, and product dimensions for all industries.

Regarding the pallets used within the racks:

  • Plastic Pallets: Made from recycled or virgin plastic, they offer high load capacity, durability, and resistance to rot. Widely used in logistics and clean environments due to their reusability and ease of cleaning.

  • Wooden Pallets: Widely used due to affordability, availability, and solid construction.

  • Steel Pallets: Suitable for extremely heavy loads, though less common due to higher costs and weight.

2. Forklift Trucks

A forklift is essential material handling equipment used to move and stack goods efficiently, saving time in warehouses and ports.

3. Robot Shuttle AGV - Automated Retrieval Vehicle

Robot Shuttle AGV (Automated Guided Vehicle) is an automated vehicle used for retrieving and transporting goods from programmed points within the rack system via remote control.

IV. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF RADIO SHUTTLE WAREHOUSES

1. Advantages

A Shuttle Warehouse is an automated management and operation system providing:

a. Space Optimization: Warehouse depth can exceed 40m.

  • The system optimizes vertical spacing between levels to maximize storage volume.

  • Distance sensors allow the Shuttle to group pallets tightly based on pre-set parameters, eliminating wasted space.

b. Cost Savings: Radio Shuttle reduces short-term operational costs.

  • Space optimization reduces the real estate footprint cost.

  • Lower energy consumption, especially in cold storage due to reduced refrigerated volume.

  • Forklifts stay out of lanes, minimizing rack collision risks and maintenance costs.

c. Time Savings: Reduced loading/unloading time as forklifts don't enter the racks.

  • Shuttle speeds reach 75 m/min (unloaded) and 35 m/min (loaded).

  • Lifting speed is only 1.5s.

  • Continuous loading/unloading features maximize time efficiency.

d. Increased Productivity: Shuttles handle in-rack movement, reducing forklift workload.

  • Fast throughput increases total inventory turnover.

  • Stable system operation, easy to use and maintain.

  • Inventory management functions allow fast retrieval and reduced labor.

e. Flexibility: SKUs are grouped by lane, allowing for diverse inventory storage.

  • Compatible with any type of forklift.

  • Works with various pallet sizes.

  • Easily scalable for future expansion.

  • Supports both LIFO and FIFO modes.

f. Safety: Since forklifts do not enter the rack lanes, the risk of structural accidents is virtually non-existent.

2. Disadvantages of Pallet Shuttle Investment

  • High Initial Investment: Implementing a Pallet Shuttle system requires significant capital for equipment, software, and installation. Beyond the racks, the shuttle robots themselves represent a major cost. This can be a barrier for SMEs or companies with limited financial resources.

  • Technology Dependency: Operation is entirely dependent on control software. Technical glitches or failures can lead to operational downtime.

  • Professional Training & Maintenance: Staff training is crucial. Operating and maintaining these modern systems effectively requires professional human resources and higher training budgets.

  • Product Limitations: Best suited for palletized, standard-sized goods. Non-uniform or irregular-sized items may not be compatible.

  • Long Implementation Time: Installation can take months to a year depending on complexity, which may disrupt existing warehouse operations during deployment.

Both the racking and the Shuttle cars are equipped with safety devices to protect operators and cargo.

A Pallet Shuttle warehouse brings significant benefits from space optimization to increased flexibility. Customers looking to upgrade their facilities can explore Intech's solutions in the Smart Warehousing section.
